Shop Recommended Cal King BedspreadsFind the Perfect Fit: A California King bedspread is a significant investment. Knowing the exact measurements—width, length, and drop—is essential to ensure your bed looks elegant and feels comfortable. This guide breaks down everything you need to know.
What Are the Exact California King Bedspread Measurements?
The standard California King mattress measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long (183 cm x 213 cm). However, a bedspread must be larger than the mattress to cover the sides and foot of the bed. The typical California King bedspread size ranges from 108 to 120 inches wide and 96 to 104 inches long, depending on the desired drop and style.
Choosing the right size involves more than just matching the mattress dimensions. You must consider your bed frame type, mattress height, and preferred aesthetic. Many shoppers find it helpful to review similar bedding guides to understand sizing nuances, though Cal King has its own specific requirements.
Standard California King Bedspread Dimensions Chart
| Bedspread Type | Width (inches) | Length (inches) | Drop Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Cal King Bedspread | 108" – 114" | 96" – 100" | 12" – 15" |
| Oversized Cal King Bedspread | 116" – 120" | 102" – 104" | 18" – 24" |
| Fitted Cal King Bedspread | 72" (mattress width) | 84" (mattress length) | 0" (fitted skirt) |
| Cal King Coverlet | 104" – 108" | 94" – 96" | 8" – 12" |
As you can see, the drop length varies significantly. A standard bedspread typically drops 12-15 inches, which is ideal for most mattresses with a standard box spring. If you have a floor-length king-size bedspread in mind, you will need to choose an oversized option.
Fitted Bedspreads vs. Oversized Bedspreads
Understanding the difference between fitted and oversized bedspreads is crucial. Fitted bedspreads (or bedspread skirts) are tailored to the exact mattress dimensions and hang to the floor, offering a clean, crisp look. Oversized bedspreads are designed to puddle on the floor or provide a generous drape, which adds a luxurious feel to your bedroom.
For many, an oversized Cal King bedspread is the preferred choice because it accommodates thick pillow-top mattresses and adjustable bed frames. If you have an adjustable bed, you might also want to explore bedskirts designed for adjustable beds to ensure a perfect fit even when the bed is raised.
How to Measure Your Bed for a California King Bedspread
To guarantee the best fit, measure your mattress and bed frame before purchasing. Here's a simple step-by-step:
- Measure the Mattress Width: Measure across the top of the mattress from edge to edge. A standard Cal King is 72".
- Measure the Mattress Length: Measure from the head to the foot of the mattress. Standard is 84".
- Measure the Mattress Height: Measure from the bottom of the box spring to the top of the mattress. Add this to your desired drop.
- Determine the Desired Drop: Decide how far down you want the bedspread to hang. Multiply the drop by two (for both sides) and add it to the width, and add the drop once for the foot of the bed.

Choosing the Right Material and Style
Beyond measurements, the material and style of your Cal King bedspread affect its look and feel. Popular options include:
- Cotton & Cotton Blends: Breathable, easy to care for, and available in various weaves. Many shoppers love the look of lightweight matelasse bedspreads for a textured, elegant appearance.
- Chenille: Soft, plush, and warm. A vintage chenille bedspread can add a cozy, nostalgic touch to your bedroom (though available in Cal King sizes, too).
- Seersucker & Matelasse: Textured fabrics that are wrinkle-resistant and add visual interest. Consider a king-size seersucker bedspread for a classic, casual look.
- Quilted Bedspreads: Lightweight and perfect for layering. They often come in beautiful patterns and are machine-washable.
When selecting a color, consider your bedroom decor. A white cotton king-size bedspread offers a timeless, fresh look, while a blue and white quilted bedspread can add a pop of color and pattern.
