King Size Bedspread Dimensions
Exact measurements, drop lengths, and buying tips for the perfect fit.
Choosing the right bedspread for a king-size bed is more than just picking a color or pattern—it's about getting the dimensions right. A bedspread that's too small leaves your mattress exposed, while an oversized one can look sloppy and drag on the floor. This guide provides the exact king size bedspread measurements in inches and centimeters, explains standard vs. oversized options, and helps you determine the ideal drop for your bed frame and mattress height.
Standard King Size Bedspread Measurements
| Dimension | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 108″ | 274 cm |
| Length | 96″ | 244 cm |
| Drop (each side) (approx.) | 18″ – 24″ | 46 – 61 cm |
| Oversized Width | 116″ – 120″ | 295 – 305 cm |
Understanding the Numbers
A standard king bed (mattress) measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. A king size bedspread typically adds extra width and length to cover the mattress, box spring, and provide a decorative drop. The 108″ x 96″ is the industry standard for a bedspread that covers the mattress and tucks in or drapes evenly.
- Width (108″): Provides about 16″ of coverage on each side (for a standard 76″ mattress), leaving a 16″ drop on each side.
- Length (96″): Covers the 80″ mattress length, plus an extra 16″ for a tuck or overhang at the foot.
- Oversized options (116″–120″): Ideal for deep mattresses (pillow-top) or if you want a luxurious, floor-length drape.
What to Consider Before Buying
Measure your mattress (plus topper). Standard is 9–12″, but pillow-top can be 14″+.
Decide how far down you want the bedspread to fall: floor-length (24″+) or mid-box spring (14–18″).
Your bed frame height affects the total drop. A higher frame needs a wider bedspread.
Bedspreads are thinner and often drape to the floor; comforters are thicker and usually stop at the mattress edge.
Which Bedspread is Right for You?
Once you've measured your king bed and know your preferred drop, you can confidently choose between standard and oversized styles. If you have a senior adjustable bed or a thick pillow-top, an oversized bedspread (116″+) will give you full coverage. For a standard mattress with a low-profile wood and upholstered king bed, the standard 108″ width is usually sufficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a king bedspread and a comforter?
A bedspread is lightweight and designed to cover the entire bed, often reaching the floor. A comforter is thicker, quilted, and generally stops at the mattress edge or slightly below.
Can I use a queen bedspread on a king bed?
No, a queen bedspread (typically 90″ x 96″) will be too narrow and will not cover the width of a king mattress. Always choose a bedspread designed for a king.
How do I measure for a king size bedspread?
Measure the width and length of your mattress, then add twice the desired drop length for the width, and add the drop length for the length. For example, for a 16″ drop: 76″ + 32″ = 108″ width; 80″ + 16″ = 96″ length.
