Small Double Bed with Mattress: The Complete Buying Guide
Everything you need to know about 4ft beds – sizes, comfort, frame styles, and the best models for compact bedrooms.
See Top Picks ↓Why a small double? Also known as a 4ft bed, it's the perfect middle ground between a single and a standard double. Ideal for guest rooms, city apartments, or growing kids – it saves space without sacrificing comfort.
What Is a Small Double Bed (4ft)?
A small double bed measures 120 cm × 190 cm (4 ft × 6 ft 3 in) in the UK / Europe, or 54″ × 75″ in the US (often called a "Three‑Quarter" bed). It's narrower than a standard double (135 cm / 4 ft 6 in) but significantly wider than a single (90 cm / 3 ft).
This size is a lifesaver for small bedrooms, guest rooms, and studio apartments. It comfortably sleeps one adult with extra room to spread out, or two slim adults for a cosy night's sleep. Many small double beds come complete with a matching mattress – saving you the hassle of hunting for a non‑standard size.

🌱 Teenagers & Students
More room than a single, ideal for growing teens or dorm rooms.
Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Small Double Bed
When you buy a small double bed with mattress, the mattress is the heart of your sleep experience. Look for these key features:
- Material: Memory foam for pressure relief, pocket springs for support, or hybrid for the best of both.
- Firmness: Soft (plush) for side sleepers, medium for back sleepers, firm for stomach sleepers or those with back pain.
- Thickness: 20–25 cm is standard; deeper mattresses (30 cm) offer more luxury.
- Cooling technology: Gel-infused or breathable covers to prevent overheating.
Many retailers offer small double mattress‑in‑a‑box options – convenient, affordable, and easy to set up. Always check the trial period and warranty before committing.
Popular Small Double Bed Frame Styles
The frame not only supports your mattress but also defines the look of your room. Here are the most popular types for small doubles:
- Platform Beds: Low profile, modern, and often include a slatted base – no box spring needed.
- Upholstered Beds: Soft fabric or leather headboards add a touch of luxury and comfort.
- Storage Beds: Integrated drawers or ottoman lift – perfect for small spaces to stash linens and clothes.
- Metal Beds: Durable, affordable, and available in a variety of finishes (black, white, brass).
- Wooden Beds: Classic, warm, and sturdy – from rustic pine to sleek oak.
When choosing a frame, check the weight capacity and assembly requirements. Some frames are designed specifically for small double mattresses, so always double‑check the dimensions.
Small Double vs. Other Bed Sizes
- Single (90×190 cm) Narrow, for one
- Small Double (120×190 cm) Best for compact rooms
- Double (135×190 cm) Standard for couples
- King (150×200 cm) Luxury, spacious
- Super King (180×200 cm) Ultimate space
📐 All lengths are 190–200 cm, so the small double is mainly narrower – ideal when width is your constraint.
What Does a Small Double Bed with Mattress Cost?
Prices vary widely based on materials, brand, and whether it includes a mattress. Here's a realistic guide:
- Budget: $250–$500 – Basic metal frames with entry‑level foam mattresses.
- Mid‑range: $500–$1,000 – Upholstered or wooden frames with quality pocket‑spring or hybrid mattresses.
- Premium: $1,000–$2,500 – Designer frames, high‑density memory foam, natural latex, or adjustable bases.
💡 Tip: Buying a complete set (bed + mattress) often saves 15–20% compared to buying separately. Many online retailers offer free delivery and 100‑night trials – take advantage of these.
5 Tips for Buying a Small Double Bed with Mattress
- Measure your room: Leave at least 60 cm around the bed for easy movement.
- Check the mattress thickness: Ensure it fits the frame's slats or base.
- Read reviews: Look for feedback on durability, comfort, and off‑gassing.
- Consider delivery & assembly: Some retailers offer white‑glove service.
- Warranty matters: A minimum 5‑year warranty is a good sign of quality.
